Each year, EHM awards scholarships to employees to further their education and training. These scholarships are possible through the loving families of former residents, who are grateful for the care their loved ones received. We are very thankful for the gifts these families have given to support our employees’ educational endeavors.
The Helen Baron Scholarship was awarded to Sonya Payne, in recognition of the care Ms. Baron received at EHM for the last 11 years of her life Sonya is finishing up her prerequisites at Schoolcraft College and then will be applying for the Registered Nursing Program. She was a CNA for 3 years prior to becoming an LPN for the last 23 years and is currently a charge nurse and midnight supervisor at Evangelical Home- Saline. Sonya says, “being a nurse is not just about managing medications, it’s about the whole picture. It’s holding a hand, giving a hug, giving a smile, or just being there to listen.”
Funded generously through The Crim Family Endowment for Dementia Education, this scholarship is in recognition of the exceptional care Dottie Crim received at the Memory Support Center. Dottie, who passed away in 2011, was a nurse and an educator. The Crim Family Scholarship was awarded to Makayla Skaggs, who is pursuing a degree in nursing at Washtenaw Community College. Makayla currently works as a personal care assistant in our Memory Support Center, saying “I have grown to personally love all my residents and go out of my way to bring them joy.”
In recognition of the care that both of her parents received as residents of Evangelical Home-Saline, Laurlee Lutz has annually funded the EHM Foundation Nursing Scholarship. Sadly, Ms. Lutz passed away this May, but we are grateful for her generosity over the years. This fall, the scholarship was awarded to Brittany Baker, who is pursuing her Associate of Science in Nursing at Hondros College of Nursing. Brittany currently works as an infection control coordinator at Evangelical Home-Saline and says, “I have a great passion for caring for those who are sick and am so thankful when I’m able to see those same patients who were at one time bedridden and fighting for their lives walk out the rehab facility doors with stride.”
The Lillian Moorehead Memorial Scholarship is open to all employees that work within Brecon Assisted Living in recognition of the care Ms. Moorehead received during her residency. This year’s funds are helping to launch our Relias employee training platform for ALL the personal assistants that work in our assisted living neighborhood at Brecon. This platform provides both regulatory and compliance trainings, as well as training specific to assisted living environments.
Again, we are grateful to the donors and families who make these employee scholarships possible. If you are interested in contributing to one of these funds or starting your own named scholarship in honor or in memory of a loved one, please reach out to the foundation.
