The Memory Support Center at Brecon Village is a certified Best Friends™ environment.  Often those living with memory loss experience confusion, anxiety and fear. To address those challenges, the program features a high ratio of personal assistants to residents who are trained to provide friendship and personal care ingrained in the Best Friends™ philosophy of care. This approach suggests that what a person with dementia needs most of all is a friend, a Best Friend. This can be a family member, friend, or staff member who empathizes with their situation, remains loving and positive, and is dedicated to helping the person feel safe, secure and valued.

The Best Friends™ Approach to Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care

The Best Friends™ Approach to Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care

This comprehensive approach is grounded in the understanding that relationships are supremely important in dementia care and require the essential elements of friendship: respect, empathy, support, trust, and humor.  The Best Friends™ Approach to Alzheimer’s and dementia care is completely person-centered and flexible enough to adapt to each person’s remaining strengths and abilities, focusing on providing joy, purpose and meaning to every resident’s day.

The Best Friends™ Approach begins with seven basic building blocks that redefines how we enhance the lives of those living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

  • Recognizing the basic rights of a person with dementia
  • Understanding what it is like to live with memory loss and dementia
  • Knowing and using the person’s Life Story
  • Knowing just what to say when communication is breaking down
  • Developing the ‘Knack’ of great dementia care
  • Experiencing meaningful engagement throughout the dayRecasting the relationship and language used from staff to Best Friend.
